About this artwork
My work exists in a space where structure and collapse coexist. I often place isolated, elongated figures within environments that feel unstable and psychologically charged. These spaces are built through dense layering—symbols, fragments, and gestural marks accumulate until the surface becomes a kind of visual archaeology.
I’m interested in the tension between control and disruption. Grids, lines, and architectural elements suggest systems—social,… political, or mental—while my mark-making resists and destabilises them. I want the work to feel both constructed and as if it’s coming apart at the same time.
There’s usually an undercurrent of crisis running through the imagery. The worlds I paint feel on the brink, yet still functioning in a fragile balance. Within this, my figures become witnesses or participants in something larger than themselves.
Ultimately, I’m exploring instability, power, and survival through a raw, evolving visual language.

Marc Rayner is an Australian artist based in Sweden who has exhibited his works nationally, as well as in Sweden, Monaco, France, Qatar, Italy, India, South Korea, Denmark, and Japan. The key to his artworks is the creation of 'quasi-landscapes' rich in text and design, or flat and almost devoid of information. This 'distorted zone' is a place where Rayner's tormented, disenfranchised, and often unfortunate characters exist. He is drawn to outsider artistic styles and naive art in broader terms.
