About this artwork
Above it all hangs the black sun in a pointed arch, a dark counter-star from which… rays fall like needles. For me, it represents a broken but still effective light source: an energy that burns rather than warms. Below and to the sides, skulls appear, like marginal figures in this inner theater.
The stark black-and-white contrasts of the woodcut intensify the tension between gravity and exuberance. I'm interested in this moment when death is no longer just a threat, but dances right into the picture – and the living figure is most afraid of opening its eyes.
