About this artwork
In "The Straw Shame" from the series "Body Images – Form and Appearance," I encounter a pile of straw bales that, under tarpaulins, transforms into an almost monumental figure. In an animistic sense, I am interested in how quickly the inanimate takes on its own essence: the folds of the fabric become garment, the form a body that stands silently in space.
The eye is inevitably drawn to the opening at the bottom, where the straw peeks out – like… an intimate zone, simultaneously concealed and revealed. With the tongue-in-cheek title "The Straw Shame," I play with this ambiguity: shame as a concealed body part, but also as a moment when an arranged object suddenly appears like a shy creature. For me, photography is an invitation to take such liminal beings seriously – figures that emerge somewhere between landscape, sculpture, and body.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery.
