About this artwork
Early on, I resisted preconceived ideas, allowing my artwork to evolve organically during the creative process. I learned to put my art heroes on the shelf. I admired Andrew Wyeth’s draftsmanship, Jasper Johns’ approach to painting, and Marcel Duchamp's revolutionary accomplishments.
I wanted to develop my own art out of curiosity. Azalea comes from walking and driving in my local surroundings. I don’t search for them. I don’t try to think about… ideas for my artwork. The ideas present themselves as a collection of quick snapshots or sketches that recur often enough to capture my attention.
With more experience, I would imagine making the picture in my mind. I could see it developing. When actually making the art, the process would suggest additional impulses. This is why I don’t know what the work looks like until it is finished. You could say I am always working on an artwork. I intentionally leave my paintings unframed to reveal the sides of the painting.
