About this artwork
Liriope is a common landscaping plant from East and Southeast Asia and is widely used in Florida. The liriope grasses in this picture surround the much larger shrub. I was attracted to the symmetry of this landscaping. But I felt that just like a good American standard song, it could benefit from improvisation. My painted rendition of this scene can be seen as a form of visual jazz.
As I examined my photo closely on my screen, I noticed textures… that would probably be overlooked while I walked by. I think of the image on my Mac screen as a wet oil painting, subject to my whims with a digital stylus brush stroke. I could paint into the image and experiment endlessly. Digital painting has tremendous advantages over conventional oil painting while preserving its look and feel. I began making digital paintings in 1981. But that is another story.
