About this artwork

The first of a new series of works the artist painted during lockdown finishing them in 2021. The theme is quite an obvious one! We are miraculously sentient beings surrounded by many beautiful, extaordinary and amazing things, yet many people spend a lot of their time just looking at a little plastic screen. Social media corporations employ an army of psychologists to make sure we do just that. There is a line in Samuel Beckett's play, 'Endgame'… wherein the central character states 'I was never there!' The artist believes this is more apt now than ever before. The painting is in acrylic and inks on compressed wooden fibreboard and was begun some time ago but completed in April 2021.

Michael Gutteridge is a British painter whose works have been extensively exhibited throughout the United Kingdom. His cityscapes combine diverse influences and involve spontaneous forms of distortion expressed via color, proportion, perspective, and an incongruous juxtaposition of styles. Often, Gutteridge endeavors to convey existentially disorientating feelings as well as other types of emotion and general sensual vibrancy. He creates using acrylics and ink on wood.
