About this artwork
The portrait captures a figure of mythic proportions. The subject possesses the lean head of a jackal, its elongated ears reaching toward the top of the frame. The sharp, intelligent eyes, yet the creature’s form transitions seamlessly into the broad shoulders of a man.
The figure is dressed in a suit defined by bold, vertical stripes of green and lemon yellow. One human hand is raised wrapped elegantly around a smoking pipe
A necktie is knotted… tightly at the throat, decorated with white five-pointed star. This pattern extends beyond the figure to become the environment itself. The background populated by a rhythmic constellation of identical stars. The lack of depth in the backdrop forces the vibrant stripes of the suit forward, creating a surreal tension between the ancient, god-like face and the attire.
Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Nagui's passion for painting blossomed during his college years. While pursuing his medical degree, he concurrently enrolled in the independent fine art study program at the University of Alexandria Atelier. This dual pursuit of art and medicine would profoundly shape his artistic perspective.
His early work quickly gained recognition. In 1973, he held his inaugural solo exhibition at the University Physician's Club, followed by another in 1975 at the prestigious French Cultural Center in Alexandria.
Upon immigrating to the United States, Nagui embarked on a career in psychiatry, a profession he believes has significantly influenced his approach to painting.
Artistic Practice: Nagui maintains a prolific output, annually producing a substantial body of work that includes medium and large-size paintings, alongside numerous smaller pieces and drawings.
