About this artwork
The celestial mother arches over the earth, swallows the sun at night and births it anew each dawn, is a symbol of the cosmos, stars, protection, and eternal renewal.
A close friend named this piece after seeing the lithe, colorless figure – evoking the Egyptian mythological goddess Nut's nurturing embrace of a thousand souls across the heavens.
Loose expressive ink lines, greys of all tones and shades and blacks for the figure's powerful form… over bold acrylic layers. The background, glowing sunset/orange horizon and vibrant abstract bursts of blue, green, red, and yellow that suggest swirling galaxies and life energy is what I call a test blotter. It's a sheet of paper I use to assess mixed colors before putting them to canvas. In this case, for a previous painting. The result is a raw, emotive fusion of mythology and modern expressionism.
Paul Bagnulo, a painter and printmaker with a background in graphic design and multimedia, works primarily with acrylic, ink, collage, and found materials. His figurative style transforms the abstract forms of Parisian rooftops—chimneys and eaves—into vibrant compositions, blending precise observation with experimental techniques. His art conveys a sense of wonder and lively admiration for urban simplicity, inviting viewers into an extemporaneous, emotionally charged exploration of everyday beauty.
