allowing it to tip over into the mysterious. The meeting and simultaneous spatial separation of the warm light from the staircase and the cool light falling through the window on the left into the implied empty space redefine the situation. The stairwell, the steps, the window, the empty space are relieved of their banal function and radiate an irritating detachment.
