About this artwork
This work was inspired by a visit to the archaeological site of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. As if through a microscope, the viewer looks at a section of a massive and powerful-looking stony world. This presents itself to him in a variety of textures and colors in order to tell him its story. Smooth edges refer to man-made, stacked massive blocks of stone. Rough surfaces covered with roots, boulders, and the diverse colors are signs of the power of nature…
and the effects of time.
From earthy materials such as pigments, ash, sand, stone powder and acrylic, Petra Knauer creates an abstract world of stone with a rough haptic surface in earthy tones (grey, black, ochre, white, apricot/pink) and gives it a sublime stillness that outlasts human time.
