About this artwork
Inspired by the special history and atmosphere in Venice, Petra Knauer's work "A Red in Bright Spots" artistically depicts a section of an old palace wall. For her, walls are not just everyday architectural elements. Rather, as stone contemporary witnesses, they tell stories about the spaces that they delimit, times in which they donated protection and security or also restricted residents and excluded them from the outside world.
People like to… ascribe durability to walls and walls just as much as to stones. But time, special site conditions and the way it is used leave their mark and bring about continuous change. Using earthy materials such as pigments, ash, sand and stone powder, but also acrylic and ink, Petra Knauer reproduces these processes of construction and decay layer by layer.
