About this artwork
For this piece, I wanted to depict Venice in what I like to call the 'dreamscape' state. Based on my own experiences walking around parts of the city in the early hours, I've stripped away the visceral intensity of human movement in the bustle of the day, to explore the quietude of the urban landscape in the moments before the world fully stirs.
Through a combination of textured oils, sweeping marks of colour, the Venice architecture emerges from,… and dissolves into the morning mist. The solitary figure of the gondolier serves as both the silent anchor and dramatic symbol of this ethereal space, embodying the stillness of the "small hours." It is a meditation on the fleeting nature of time and light, capturing the soul of a city that feels both ancient and transient, suspended between the water and the hazy sky.
