About this artwork
For this piece I was inspired partly by the Covid pandemic and the curious feel of empty streets during that time.
I’ve always had a curious fascination with rare moments of silence in big cities, almost as if for a brief moment when the streets are free of people, the scene radiates a ghostly energy of it’s own, one of past lives and activity that goes back generations.
The apparitions of people in the scene reflect echoes of a busy city life… in pre covid times, and also of lives that may go back even further.
The central figure, evoking her own sadness and isolation in the present day is watched over by an apparition whose energy travels with her. I take comfort in the idea that this ghostly energy is nothing sinister, but a benign presence that is always with us and helping to guide us in our own moments of isolation and loneliness.
