About this artwork
My contemporary landscape paintings are greatly influenced by my passion for hiking and walking across the UK. This piece was inspired primarily by the drama of the Lake District in Cumbria. There is a timeless quality about connecting with the majesty of the landscape whatever the season. Every time is a fresh experience visually with the constantly changing weather and light, always variable and challenging.
Having walked for a few hours around… the lake, as I gained height I was stuck by the intensity of the light on the hills, water and fields. I decided to take some time to make extensive sketches and notes that I could later work on in my studio. I particularly felt that the landscape had come alive and were vibrant with colours. These colours felt as though they enveloped me as I sat quietly drawing.
Philippa Headley is a painter with a rich background in art history and formal training, primarily working in oils but also using acrylics. Her technique is deeply expressionistic, evolving between impressionistic, abstract, and representational, often driven by intuitive responses to landscape and colour. She explores the interplay of land, sea, and atmosphere, aiming for evocative compositions that invite viewers to experience a deeply personal, emotional connection with nature’s fleeting moments.
