About this artwork
Waking up, grabbing my sketch book and hiking up into the hills definitely brings its rewards. The freshness and clarity of the air as the sun breaks through spreading its light and colours onto the landscape below has to be speedily captured. I love the contrasts between the near and distant hills as they recede into the distance glowing in the first light of the day. My aim is not to capture the 'reality' of the colours within the landscape… but rather to express the strength of the light and the feelings it generates. The warms of the intense pinks yellow and oranges that melt into gentler mauves, violets and blues in the far mountains are what brings meaning to me in terms of the mood of the place. Having made notes in both linear drawings and studies I also note down any words that may spring to mind that will help me reimagine the scene when I return to my studio. Once back in the studio I can them review my thoughts on pin boards before starting the painting.
Philippa Headley is a painter with a rich background in art history and formal training, primarily working in oils but also using acrylics. Her technique is deeply expressionistic, evolving between impressionistic, abstract, and representational, often driven by intuitive responses to landscape and colour. She explores the interplay of land, sea, and atmosphere, aiming for evocative compositions that invite viewers to experience a deeply personal, emotional connection with nature’s fleeting moments.
