About this artwork
There are moments when nothing is more important than truly observing the beauties of nature. In this valley the changing light has the effect of making the mountains appear on fire because of its intensity. The power of the sunlight changes the somewhat sombre feel of the rocks' surface into a brilliant shining element of nature. I love to capture these moments in my sketchbook. Back in the studio I spent ages thinking about the colour that… I had endeavoured to record in my mind's eye before making the first brush mark.
Philippa Headley is a painter with a rich background in art history and formal training, primarily working in oils but also using acrylics. Her technique is deeply expressionistic, evolving between impressionistic, abstract, and representational, often driven by intuitive responses to landscape and colour. She explores the interplay of land, sea, and atmosphere, aiming for evocative compositions that invite viewers to experience a deeply personal, emotional connection with nature’s fleeting moments.
