The encyclopedia page features a photographic image of a sculptural relief, the "Ark of the 14th Century." The rigidity of the marble bas-relief, with figures and decorations frozen in stone, becomes the starting point. It is as if the design seeks to free what is trapped in the marble, restoring movement and life to the rigor of the stone. The work seems a reflection on the relationship between life and memory, between what matter preserves and… what the spirit continues to evoke. The "ark" is no longer simply a sacred or funerary object, but becomes a vessel of energies, of presences that outlast time. Suspended between sacredness and anxiety, between historical stratification and contemporary gesture, this image becomes an almost contemporary attempt to dialogue with the shadows of the past through the language of sign and color.
« If we assign a place to art by designating it a space in which it must act, then we run the risk of rendering it harmless. Art must be subversive. -Anselm Kiefer »
