About this artwork
Freedom of the press is a precious asset of democracy. It is increasingly being restricted. And not only in autocracies, but unfortunately also in democracies. Journalists are imprisoned and treated like criminals, even though they are just trying to do their job. Even murder is no longer a dreaded offense, especially when it comes to investigative journalists.
The bald eagle is meant to represent freedom of the press, or rather, the media itself.… In contrast, the vulture on the burning earth represents the fear-mongering press, which willingly seeks to manipulate by any means necessary. The historic wooden type box alludes to the precision required in the work of the writing profession, while the flitting, still virgin sheets of paper await their use, wherever their journey takes them. The dynamic color and form language brings energy and urgency to the image—perfect for imbuing any space with a powerful message of courage and openness.
