About this artwork
The Pergamon Altarpiece on Berlin's Museum Island depicts battling gods with giants. With its fragmented and partially destroyed depiction, it represents, in my opinion, a vivid example of the violence, destruction, and senselessness of war. Depicted here with a partial section of the northern relief—one assumes—are the sons Phobes ("Fear") and Demos ("Terror") of Ares, the lover of Aphrodite. Adorned with the rainbow flag of the peace movement and… painted over with the dove as a symbol of peace, it is intended to place peace above war.
Using bold acrylic paints and expressive forms, I have combined inner struggle and hope here. The dominant white dove symbolizes peace, embedded in vibrant, sometimes chaotic colors that represent suffering and diversity. This work invites you to feel deeply and sense the longing for harmony. It brings vibrant energy and hope to any space in which it hangs.
