About this artwork
As I was trying to decide what my own shield may be I came back to the orange trees of Granada and my own fixation on a tree outside of the Monasterio de San Jerónimo. This tree is not necessarily a standout but something about it makes it beautiful to me. The tree’s roots
are nestled in a bed of roses and my own ongoing creative connection to the senses linked to the rose.
Made during my December Art Residency at Espacio Lavadero part of Lateral… in Granada, Spain. Part of my Solo Exhibition Work: “An Intentional Shield”
This piece is part of my “Wearable Art” collection and was worn in my fashion show as part of the official Amsterdam Museum Nacht Event on Nov.1, 2025.

Rika Maja Duevel is a painter/mixed media artist from Stavanger, Norway living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Her artwork manifests from her daily experiences, capturing the moment through an introverted lens. A focus on her own female experience and the journey and deeper research into the concept of the Introverted Artist, the unseen soul. An award-winning artist and graduate of Wheaton College, SACI, and Lesley University she has exhibited in Amsterdam, Rome, Venice, Bologna, Naples, Florence, Milan, Barcelona, Granada, Paris, Seoul , Tokyo, and Buenos Aires. An Artist in Residence in Barcelona, Granada, Spain, Ardèche, France, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Guest Artist Lecturer at the University of Amsterdam’s Business School (UVA), published in the “50 Artists to Watch 2023” and “50 Artists to Discover 2025” by the Florence Contemporary Gallery, and named one of the “Top 30 Influential Women Entrepreneurs to Watch Out For in 2025” by NY Weekly Magazine.
