About this artwork
Created for my 2022 "Leaps and Bounds" series, this contemporary oil painting on masonite captures a pivotal evolution toward my current philosophy of Ipseity. It explores "Coastal Tectonics", the raw, structural collision of stone and sky where the land yields to the ocean. While my recent work moves toward "Quietude," this textured seascape vibrates with the restless, turbulent energy of a landscape in motion.
Masonite’s rigidity (I generally use… masonite) was essential for this heavy impasto work, allowing for an aggressive, sculpturesque application of oil. This creates a powerful tactile dialogue between the jagged, deep-toned weight of the coastal cliffs and the ethereal, scumbled light of the mist.
For the collector, this work documents the "Exogenous" phase of my journey: an outward leap into rugged abstraction before my practice shifted toward the internal landscapes I create today. It is a vital bridge between the scenery of the past and the selfhood of the present.

I paint what I feel. After a life in finance, the palette knife became my primary way of speaking, plainly, without ornament. My subject is land, sea, and sky, held less as record than as memory of standing inside them.
I work in oils, building surface until it holds weight, something to be touched as much as seen, according to those who collect my work. Whether the canvas is small enough to hold in one hand or large enough to walk into, the intention doesn't change: a place that is as much interior as it is geographical.
In my mid-70s, I look for Self in the work, a thing being entirely itself, answerable to no one. The work says what I couldn't otherwise say. What you find in it is yours.
