About this artwork
Painted from direct observation in my Montreal studio, the landscape emerged through subtraction. A limited palette allows space to breathe, while calligraphic branches cross the composition as single, decisive strokes… set against a horizon that refuses solidity.
In my seventh decade, my work has moved into a phase of Ipseity, where felt experience takes precedence over representation. I was drawn to the heavy silence of a daybreak—the weight of a fallen trunk held against mist and water that dissolve more than define. A faint yellow glow is anchored just above the shoreline, sensed rather than seen.
Emptiness functions as a compositional principle. The mist softens memory into presence, inviting stillness and sustained attention.

I work in oils, building surface until it holds weight, something to be touched as much as seen, according to those who collect my work. Whether the canvas is small enough to hold in one hand or large enough to walk into, the intention doesn't change: a place that is as much interior as it is geographical.
In my mid-70s, I look for Self in the work, a thing being entirely itself, answerable to no one. The work says what I couldn't otherwise say. What you find in it is yours.
