About this artwork
When paint accumulates, the knife comes back across the surface and takes it away. What is left is not absence. It is evidence.
It began as leftover paint, worked with a palette knife. The top section was scraped back. What the scraping revealed was not a mistake corrected but a truth uncovered. Water. Land. The compressed weight of a sky that has been there longer than any witness to it.
The piece belongs to a sustained inquiry into Ipseity, the… irreducible core of self that persists beneath accumulated experience, beneath the layers we apply and those we remove. It will form part of my next show in 2028, a body of work in miniature that presses further into it.
The foreground carries the knife's full energy. The scraped upper register is quieter, older. Both are the same painting. Both are the same question.
Presented in a floating frame, the work sits slightly proud of its mount, casting a shadow that gives it a sculptural presence on the wall.

I paint what I feel. After a life in finance, the palette knife became my primary way of speaking, plainly, without ornament. My subject is land, sea, and sky, held less as record than as memory of standing inside them.
I work in oils, building surface until it holds weight, something to be touched as much as seen, according to those who collect my work. Whether the canvas is small enough to hold in one hand or large enough to walk into, the intention doesn't change: a place that is as much interior as it is geographical.
In my mid-70s, I look for Self in the work, a thing being entirely itself, answerable to no one. The work says what I couldn't otherwise say. What you find in it is yours.
