About this artwork
A walk through a frosty winter landscape inspired this and two other paintings in this series: hoarfrost and ice crystals contrasted against a brilliant blue sky. Between the biting cold and the first warming rays of sunshine – this is precisely the atmosphere I wanted to capture with delicately layered coats of color.
The surface appears almost frozen – delicate, light structures are reminiscent of traces in ice, slowly dissolving. Into this still,… frosty composition breaks a warm, intense accent of color.
Beneath the surface lies the original form of a five-petaled flower. It remains deliberately understated, appearing only in hints, like a faint memory of a summer past.
I made the colors myself from pigments. For the top layers, I used a silky-gloss acrylic binder, which makes the colors appear slightly different on the surface depending on the room and daylight.
