About this artwork
"TSUNAMI" was created one year after the violent undersea earthquake in Japan in 2011. "Tsu" means "harbor" and "Nami" means wave. This painting is a reference to Hokusai's painting "The Wave."
With Tsunami, I push my research on forces in motion to the extreme. Here, the upheaval is frontal, cataclysmic, absolute. The work evokes less the sea than the very substance of the catastrophe.… It makes tangible the precise moment when the broken balance becomes submersion.
It is the clash between earth and water, between the frozen and the fluid, between tectonic memory and brutal eruption. The painting does not represent the wave - it is the memory of its impact, inscribed in the texture.
Tsunami imposes a frontal reality: that of the event, of the threat, of the irreversible.
