About this artwork
This picture brings together two quotes from the Dutch baroque era that were created almost at the same time ( Gerhard Terborch around 1660 and Jan Asselijn 1650 ) but would certainly never have been shown together in one picture. Terborch's depiction of the back is only an excerpt from a genre scene that he varied many times. The still scene, tailored entirely to the brocade dress and showing all his painterly skill, is now abruptly interrupted… by an angry swan defending its enclosure. This virtuoso image by Jan Asselijn shows the bird's full determination to protect its eggs and the reason for this behavior is in the dog approaching the enclosure on the lower left of the image. However, the dog cannot be seen and so the attack of the bird is directed towards the quietly withdrawn woman, apparently for no reason. The picture plays with the different moods of the genres and the opulence and virtuosity of the painting.
« I like art that combines old and new, is professionally made, has a sense of humor, arouses curiosity, makes you smarter, and which you never forget. »
