About this artwork
The discovery of this beautiful photograph from the 1950s inspired this image. The slightly erotic undertone of the picture needed a counterpoint to make the scene seem less overtly sensual. The monkey, formerly a symbol of sin, among other things, here rather casually and with a bored air, opens the complicated corset that constricts the woman. The monkey thus liberates the woman from her restrictive garment, which is actually meant to make her…
more attractive. In this image, the monkey takes on a completely new function. He frees women from the constraints of an ideal of the female body that was long dictated by male perception. See?
