About this artwork
A report on Sam Gilliam (1933-2022), the first African-American painter to exhibit at the Venice Biennale in 1972, gave me the idea for a portrait juxtaposition. I wanted to contrast the intense portrait of the abstract painter, who belonged to the Color Field painting movement, with a classical portrait. Rembrandt's self-portrait from 1657 seemed to me to be the perfect contrast. The pink color that makes Gilliam's T-shirt glow is scattered in wild…
splashes across the classic portrait, suggesting a new era in painting.
