About this artwork
After a trip to Venice, I painted this picture of this amazing city. Here you can see a famous, romantic view of the church of Santa Maria della Salute with passers-by in front of it. If you look closely, you can see some smartphone users, which does not detract from the beauty of the situation, but rather refers to the present time. I painted the picture on a canvas made of natural-colored linen. First, I painted the sky and water surface white…
to emphasize the brightness of these areas. The background of the old kiosk, the floor and the bridge remained natural. Then I painted the whole picture in two layers of oil paint. I designed the clouds like the old Dutch painters did. The whole painting has the elegant charm of old pictures with people from modern times on it.

« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
