About this artwork
Letter Opener with Amethyst was forged with hammer and anvil from a 20 ounce ingot of pure silver and has been work-hardened for strength. It took 126 hours to complete -- the stages of its creation may be seen on my website (wesleyharris.ca) under the Process tab. The simple shape of this piece reflects my preference for clean lines and classic designs. I love the gradation of taper and thickness throughout which, for me, is inspired by the inherent…
logic of growth patterns in nature -- a tree, for example, as it continually tapers from trunk to branch tips. The letter opener stands on its own as a slender triangle. It seems to hover above the tabletop, and it reads clearly as to where it receives the user's hand. The location of the amethyst allows light to enter the gem from both below and above.
