My Rose Bowl has been smithed and constructed in a Japanese lamination technique called mokume gane (woodgrain metal). I made the laminate from scratch using layers of 22 k. yellow gold, pure silver and pure copper. On my website (www.wesleyharris.ca) under the Process tab, the creation of this mokume Rose Bowl is illustrated with photos and descriptions. In the Singulart photos of this piece, I have included a detail of the mokume to show a small… crack in the copper -- there must have been a slight weakness in the laminate, and I wanted to point it out. The gemstone in the handle is a sphalerite that measures 12 mm. across. It is a very brilliant and soft gem material and, at this size and clarity, is quite rare. The deep orange and yellow fire in this sphalerite coordinates beautifully with the colours of the copper and 22 k. gold. The metal on the underside of the handle is sterling silver. Rose Bowl took 356 hours to create.
