About this artwork
Lotus and Landscape is a small sculptural piece inspired by my high-school Art teacher's recollections of having grown up in western China. This gentleman often spoke of how the mountains rose straight up from the rivers. I tried to capture this feeling in the terraced landscape, which includes moss agate pools and sterling waterfalls, and is contained in a hinged sphere. Within the base, a realistic lotus blossom is situated on a jade leaf. …
Its petals are made of pure silver -- brightly polished on their outer surfaces and left frosty white inside -- which surround a central faceted citrine with a spray of 14 k. yellow gold stamens. The base and stem are formed from one sheet of sterling silver, yielding an almost yin-yang feeling of inside and outside surfaces and three-dimensional interest. Lotus and Landscape took 373 hours to create.
