About this artwork
The American “Western” has contributed a lot to the development of our image of men, be it in the figure of the “lonely cowboy” or the Indian who knows no pain.
After I had painted flowers, ice cream, perfume and soft biscuits, I felt like doing something robust and typically masculine again and the Marlboro Man from my youth immediately appeared.
Photographer and artist Richard Prince caused a sensation in the 1980s with his appropriation art.… He photographed excerpts from Marlboro advertisements (rephotography), enlarged them, and sold them successfully. A single such photo sold for $3.4 million at Sotheby's New York.
I, too, am an appropriation artist. I appropriate Prince's Marlboro rephotography and bring it back into art, into painting.
Picture 2 of this series has an almost impressionistic character due to the snowy winter landscape (snowflakes, fur and fur structure).
