About this artwork
Just like CD Friedrich's, the picture is based on a strict composition. The mast with its cross shape is slightly moved from the center to the right in the spirit of the golden ratio. The bright red stripe forms the mid-vertical of the picture and the axes of the winches and the cut railing with their diagonal alignments create a sense of space and depth. The cross is not only a Christian symbol for Jesus' death on the cross. For the Romans it was…
a sign of divine-heavenly order and orientation (urban planning), for the Egyptians it was a symbol of continued life in the afterlife. Jesus was nailed to the cross by the Roman occupying troops in order to symbolically restore the heavenly order on earth. I myself am in the middle of the painting: taking photographs, as a reflection on the winch, between the mainland (life) and the infinity of the horizon (death), a very personal, authentic work.
