The American “Western” has contributed a lot to the development of our image of men, be it in the figure of the “lonely cowboy” or the Indian who knows no pain.
After painting flowers, ice cream, perfume, and soft biscuits, I felt like creating something robust and typically masculine, and the Marlboro Man from my youth immediately popped into my head.
Photographer and artist Richard Prince caused a sensation in the 1980s with his appropriation… art. He photographed excerpts from Marlboro advertisements (rephotography), enlarged them, and sold them successfully. A single such photo sold for $3.4 million at Sotheby's New York.
I, too, am an appropriation artist. I appropriate Prince's Marlboro rephotography and bring it back into art, into painting.
