About this artwork
Discovering beauty in simple things: Warhol's screen prints based on Polaroid PHOTOS were not enough for me, despite the innovation. For my Pop Art reference, I designed the Del Monte ketchup bottle in oil with the same enthusiasm as Jan van Eyck once did with the Holy Grail. And my ketchup bottle actually corresponds to the blood chalice: in Hollywood's B-movies, liters of ketchup were spilled as film blood. The "Del Monte Quality" seal on the label…
refers to the hill of Golgotha, the mountain of skulls on which Christ was crucified. Red and gold/yellow are the colors of his reign. The white of the screw cap stands for his purity and innocence. The barcode symbolizes the new empire of money, capitalism, in which the old values are converted to market value. The "divine transmitted light" of the classical painting tradition has remained. It falls from the top left onto the bottle and enhances its dignity and simple elegance.
