About this artwork
Wilhelm Dilthey, German theologian and philosopher, former student and namesake of the Dilthey School (formerly the Royal Gymnasium). I am an enthusiastic Diltheyan in the sense that I was captivated by Dilthey's interesting physiognomy from the very beginning: that furrowed face marked by life experience, the alert eyes, the upright posture and personal charisma; I always wanted a grandfather like that. yellowed photograph in the office of the Dilthey School, a classical grammar school in Wiesbaden, where I worked as an art teacher in the 1980s. I made an oil painting based on this photo in 1983 on the occasion of the celebrations of his 150th birthday. The picture has the impressive size of 135 x 120cm. It is a synthesis of photography, which had just been invented in Dilthey's era, and the Neo-Impressionist style that was created at the time the picture was taken.
