About this artwork
Wilhelm Dilthey, German theologian and philosopher, former student and namesake of the Dilthey School (formerly the Royal Gymnasium). I am an enthusiastic Diltheyan in the sense that I was captivated by Dilthey's interesting physiognomy from the very beginning: that furrowed face marked by life experience, the alert eyes, the upright posture and personal charisma; I always wanted a grandfather like that. I first saw his picture in the form of a small… yellowed photograph in the office of the Dilthey School, a classical grammar school in Wiesbaden, where I worked as an art teacher in the 1980s. I made an oil painting based on this photo in 1983 on the occasion of the celebrations of his 150th birthday. The picture has the impressive size of 135 x 120cm. It is a synthesis of photography, which had just been invented in Dilthey's era, and the Neo-Impressionist style that was created at the time the picture was taken.
Wolfgang Eberhardt, a passionate painter, discovered his artistic talent through emotional experiences. His figurative works are created through careful use of charcoal, color pigments and binding agents, creating images full of magic and impulse. His art is a bridge of communication, with the aim of reaching the viewer deeply and triggering emotion. With love as his strongest force, he always strives to express true human feelings through his art.
