About this artwork
In 2023, I bought oriental carpets to try them out as a painting surface. I wanted to paint a picture of a Persian girl on a smaller one, as the Orient was notorious for child labor. In the last century, many carpet dealers offered small knotted runners or doormats knotted by children, mostly girls, as a bonus or as an incentive to buy. While searching the Internet for a child's photo, I came across Kristina Pimenova, a Russian child model who was…
marketed by her mother before she was even 4 years old. Kristina was later named the "most beautiful girl in the world" by Woman Daily magazine. She has been in front of the camera for almost all major fashion brands (Armani, Benetton, Burberry). Not even 10 years old, she was stylized by designers as a young woman with extreme sex appeal. That's when I suddenly realized that child labor is not just a problem in the third world.
