A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - Across 'Fragments' and 'Attitudes,' R. Scott MacLeay looks at the space between people—how we present ourselves, how we relate to one another, and how easily intimacy can slip into distance. Bodies are cropped, repeated, turned away, or brought into unexpected proximity. MacLeay keeps the compositions deliberately flat, using saturated fields of color and carefully placed figures to create images that can feel controlled at first, then increasingly strange the longer you look. There is a tension between closeness and isolation throughout the work. A gesture can suggest intimacy without revealing the relationship behind it; two figures can occupy the same space and still feel entirely separate. Even the body itself becomes fragmented, reduced at times to a shoulder, a hand, a profile, or a gesture. 'Between Us' brings these works together around that ambiguity. MacLeay gives us the appearance of connection while leaving the emotional distance unresolved.
