About this artwork
As a en plein air (i.e. outside) painter I am always looking for striking subjects to paint. I love the color yellow and this volunteer dill in full bloom growing in a barn yard caught my eye. How do I know the dill had not been planted, at least not recently? The barn was falling down, abandoned. The dill was as tall as I was. I must have caught it at its peak. After I made my painting I cut a few pieces to take the dill and its memory home…

The paper is expensive and most often I would paint a study first in order to test the humidity and my paint selection. In this case, I saw my subject and felt confident and just set to painting.
