About this artwork
Not every creek or river has exposed tree roots along the banks but mountain streams, creeks, kills, small rivers, do. In mountainous areas water may often be running slowly and shallowly but when a big rainfall comes all at once the flow is fast and deep and carries with it the dirt, rocks and boulders from the banks with it as it rushes down to the sea.
The seasons before this must have been stormy and wet because these tree roots were barely… hanging on to the bank while the others half twisted and snaked through the air many feet down to the water. I was reminded of Van Gogh's beautiful painting of an ugly subject, "Tree Roots", 1890.
Alix Hallman Travis is a painter with a background of formal study at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Art Students League in New York, working primarily in watercolors and oils. She employs loose, expressive brushwork in watercolor and bold palette knife techniques with oils, preferring whimsy and vibrant, imaginative compositions over strict realism. Her work joyfully captures the life of local communities, radiating optimism and happiness through her signature use of radiant yellows, aiming to evoke the same delight and warmth she feels about the world around her.
