About this artwork
"Karl" is a multifaceted portrait of the writer Karl May, which Andreas Garbe conceives as a sculpturally textured space for resonance. The figure does not emerge as a classical likeness, but rather develops from a dense surface of material reminiscent of geological strata. Luminous reds and ochres meet cool turquoise lines, creating an atmosphere in which biography, memory, and artistic interpretation merge. The work belongs to Garbe's series of… literary portraits, which pays tribute to authors who have personally influenced him. It is also part of the exhibition "From Shadow to Light," which, for the first time, reveals the relationship between his figurative painting and his abstract alter ego, Julio Fernandez.
« Art that fascinates me is often like a symbiosis of philosophical magic and good craft. »
Andreas Garbe is an artist based in Germany whose paintings have been exhibited nationally, as well as in Switzerland. Working abstractly with figurative and representational influences, his diverse compositions are both atmospheric and philosophical. In addition, Garbe explores themes relating to social issues, literature, meditation, and sensory perception. His landscapes, figurative pieces and abstractions are created using acrylics, oils, and resin on canvas.
