In Renge 14 she explores the use of digital mixed media collage to achieve the spatial contradictions of her desert environment juxtaposed with the softness of a wildflower. This is a continuation of her interpretation of the theme of cause and effect and is consistent with her emphasis on contradictions in the context of the meaning of the word Renge - the simultaneity of cause and effect symbolized by flowers that seed and blossom in muddy water… - at the same time. Her work is influenced by Buddhist traditions of T’ien-t’ai in China and Nichiren Daishonin in Japan (1222-1282).
« Obstacles are opportunities to strengthen my resolve to manage impermanence and the ever-changing aspects of life, setting free the spirit trapped within to create my art. »
Barbara Gothard, is a contemporary visual artist, who, though originally from Illinois, has truly made the Palm Springs/Mojave Desert area her home. As a woman artist working in a landscape often associated with vast extremes, she's become a living embodiment of the contradictions she explores in her work. Her art interprets the complexities of human experience, focusing particularly on the subconscious. Living amidst the desert's awe-inspiring colors, light, and endless skies, Gothard's surroundings deeply influence her creative process, grounding her work in the light and majesty of this unique environment. Her path to artistry has been shaped by a blend of traditional art training and a rich background in global business, giving her a multi-layered perspective that infuses her artworks with depth and resonance. Her artworks are widely exhibited, commissioned and collected nationally and internationally and she is an art magazine writer/contributor.
