About this artwork
We only had a couple of days in San Francisco but HAD to see the Golden Gate Bridge to capture its size in relationship to the surroundings. I had my full painting gear in the truck but knew I could not do 16x20 so I took my mini kit along an inviting cliff top trail, perched on a rock (much to the annoyance of groups of hikers) and to make my block-in on a 9x12 panel. The objective was to capture foreground colors clean and bold, shapes more or… less but focus on the distant horizon with the bridge melting in and out of the mist. I loved the big rocks, windswept pine clutching on to cliff-side and white caps in the vibrant sea below. My mini sketch was still wet and smeared when I got home but my priority was to work it up to 30 x 24. It took a long time to complete!
