About this artwork
A naked woman, crouching, completely curled up, her back rounded, so much so that one might think of an egg... The embryonic egg, the egg as an image of the planet, a mirror of the Earth, a mysterious object whose life-bearing interior remains unknown. What if this egg-woman were the mother goddess, the primordial deity, this Gaia sometimes synonymous with the Earth? An Earth upon whose surface humankind writes its history. As for the image of this… possible Gaia, it seems painted on reptile skin or raw leather...
This painting is a unique piece created using mixed media on canvas, combining photography, digital composition, and acrylic paint (multiple transparent glazes that give a lacquered effect and a raised signature square). The work is framed in black wood (overall dimensions: approximately 47 x 57 x 3.5 cm).
« In the age of digital technologies, I couldn't just be a painter or a photographer. My 'paintographies' destroy borders and offer a resolutely contemporary hybrid art. »
Georges Dumas's artistic approach is both simple and complex. While the aesthetic of his works, which he describes as "paintographies," is highly figurative, their composition is slow and complex, blending photography, digital art, and acrylic paint. Georges Dumas transforms the models he photographs into virtual sculptures by replacing their skin with mineral materials to represent both the passage of time and the fragility of the body.
