About this artwork
"Neither. Nor." is a deeply personal self-portrait that addresses the rift between two cultures. Although I have lived in Germany for over 15 years, I am often still perceived as a "stranger" here. In Iran, however, I was never truly welcome as a queer person; my existence there was forbidden and life-threatening. The heavy concrete block on my shoulders represents the double burden of alienation. The labyrinthine lines on my body reflect the struggle… to find my own path. The scar on my leg, shaped like the map of Iran, recalls the wounds of origin and exile. This image speaks of identity, loss, and the tireless attempt to find a place of belonging.
Imanuel Scheiko, born in Shiraz and now living in Berlin, works as a painter with a deep background in photography and intercultural experience. His works combine ancient Persian patterns with the modern complexity of Berlin, revealing an exciting contrast between past and present, often with paradoxical as well as harmonious elements. Through his art, he conveys strong emotions of introspection, self-discovery, and acceptance, while sensitively and powerfully addressing social issues as well as queer and masculine identities.
