About this artwork
An interplay between the city of London and the waters of the Thames, invite the viewer to contemplate the depths beneath the surface . Wishes for clean water in all our rivers is a universal concern and the unusual viewpoint and high horizon line serve to draw attention to this desire.
Julie Hammonds, a self-taught painter with a background as a PE teacher, works primarily in oils and acrylics, drawing daily inspiration from her sea-view studio in Plymouth. Her figurative, classically traditional oil pieces “paint what she sees” but with intense color, hue, and emotion, while her acrylics embrace spontaneity, inviting form to emerge. Through her exploration of the collective unconscious and the rhythms of nature, she conveys profound feelings of enrichment and renewal, expressing the emotional truths and the passage of time within both landscape and portraiture.
