About this artwork
This work depicts the structure of relationships that arises from differences in the height of one’s gaze. The two figures make eye contact with each other, yet one looks up from below while the other looks down from above. Although their gazes clearly intersect, they are not equal. The figure above places a hand on the shoulder of the figure below; this gesture appears intimate on the surface, but within it lies a sense of pressure and control.…
The figure below tilts their head upward, looking into the eyes of the one above, thereby revealing the position they occupy within the relationship. True love and healthy relationships begin only when both can look directly into each other’s eyes—without looking up or down, but meeting at the same level. Restoring this shared height is the starting point for reclaiming the essence of a relationship.
Through the simple act of eye contact, this work asks how hierarchy operates within relationships, and how we might overcome it.
A painter by profession, Jungwan Chae boldly brings his military background to life. He employs anonymized, bald figures in suits to critique society, utilizing simple yet impactful beans to depict modern social realities. His art passionately expresses individual and collective dissatisfaction, stimulating dialogue about societal issues.
