About this artwork
During my military service, I managed an ammunition depot located deep in the mountains. While working there, I frequently encountered various moths, and observing their intricate patterns up close broke my long-held assumption that moths were unpleasant creatures. Their beauty had simply been obscured by the dark, damp environments they inhabit and the negative image associated with them.
The first artwork I created after completing my service was… a self-portrait with a moth over my face. It represents my desire to view others and society without prejudice, and my hope that others, in turn, will see me without preconceived judgments.
More than ten years have passed since I painted this piece, yet as an artist who depicts society, the thing I remain most cautious of is prejudice. Whenever I work, I recall the moths I encountered in the ammunition depot and the mindset I had when creating this painting, using those memories to reset and refine my perspective.
A painter by profession, Jungwan Chae boldly brings his military background to life. He employs anonymized, bald figures in suits to critique society, utilizing simple yet impactful beans to depict modern social realities. His art passionately expresses individual and collective dissatisfaction, stimulating dialogue about societal issues.
