About this artwork
In this work from the "Winterscapes" series, I am interested in the quiet staging of a familiar landscape. The snow lies across the meadow like a smooth, gently undulating surface – a distinctive wave that both calms and tensions the space. In front of and behind it, a curved row of posts runs through the picture, as if deliberately placed: two subtle lines that guide the eye and convey a delicate melancholy.
The wintry forest frames the scene like… a stage. Dark spruces, icy crowns, and pale trees at the edges form a backdrop that is both shelter and setting. In this combination of reduction, rhythm, and subtle transitions, the landscape feels to me almost like a picture from Japanese photography: restrained, clear, and full of nuances. I try to capture this state—when order, nature, and mood merge for a moment into a silent composition.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his works, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published various art publications (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented internationally in academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, Düsseldorf, and Berlin).
